Suite Owner vs. Commission Stylists in LA: My Experience and Insights
As someone who has experienced both sides of the hairstyling business in Los Angeles—from working at commission salons to owning my suite—I've seen firsthand the pros and cons that each setup offers. Both paths have their unique benefits and challenges, and I’m excited to share my journey with you.
Starting in Commission Salons
I am immensely grateful for the commission-based salons where I began my career. These places are fantastic for budding stylists looking to build a clientele and gain invaluable salon experience. In commission salons, you're often provided with a steady flow of clients and the necessary products (color, styling products, backbar), which is a huge plus. However, you do give up a significant portion of your earnings—typically a 50/50 split with the salon. In LA, this model is especially prevalent, with many salons also handling some advertising, which is crucial when you're new to such a vast city.
However, it’s important to note that while the salon covers product costs, the financial returns can feel limited. After all deductions, you might find yourself keeping only about 30% of what you earn. It can work if the salon has high traffic, but you really have to hustle.
Transitioning to Owning My Suite
Running my own business in West Hollywood over the past year has been an exhilarating roller coaster. Owning a suite allows me the freedom to set my own schedule and cultivate a salon vibe that resonates with both my clients and me. There’s something profoundly rewarding about creating an environment that reflects my aesthetic and where my clients feel completely at ease.
Owning a suite also means you’re in charge all the time. Unlike in a commission salon where you can clock out and leave the work behind, owning a business feels like a 24/7 endeavor. The responsibility is immense, but so is the satisfaction of steering your own ship.
The Verdict
Both paths have their merits. Working in a commission salon offers a wonderful platform for learning and growth without the stress of managing the business side of things. You show up, do what you love, and go home. On the other hand, owning a suite provides a fantastic opportunity to really make a mark on your terms but requires a significant commitment and business acumen.
I wouldn’t have it any other way, and I’m so thankful for the leap I took. A huge thank you to all my beautiful clients who make this possible. I love you so much. ✨
